UNDER THE DESERT SKIES

Welcome! We will be connecting with you once a month and hope you enjoy our little stories. 

I must admit, I don’t pick the animals that I write stories about. They pick me. Every single one of them.

For example, the Western Screech Owls have been living in our eaves for many years. Every year we watch the owlets take their very clumsy first flight, and quite frequently we hear them first, as they often crashed into our kitchen window while venturing out for the first time.

The owl family living on our property inspired the following poem, which then became the story for the Curious segment of our first book in the Under the Desert Skies series: The Stinky, Curious and Disgusting.

The Curious

The time has come for owlet to spread his wings and try flying

He mews 

He cries

He stretches

Then tries

Crash!

Owlet’s Mama lands close by and coos,

Don’t fret

It’s okay

Tomorrow is another day

Owlet can’t get back into his home

His flight is too sketchy

He feels all alone

But Mama is always nearby and steady

Don’t fret

It’s okay

You will fly when you’re ready

Owlet’s confused between day and night

Owls are nocturnal

But he wants to practice flight

Life is amazing!

As he dances in the sun

Splashing in the birdbath

Life is so fun!

Mama is tired

She was up all night long

She snuggles with owlet

And coos him a song:

Settle down little one

It’s time to rest

Close your eyes, breathe deep

Make me your nest

But owlet is curious

There’s so much to see

Hey what are you doing?

Hey, hey! Look at me!

Finally owlet gets tired

It’s time to sleep

Soon it will be nighttime

But for now, this will keep

Mama and owlet get a brief rest

And then once again

He puts flight to the test

Mama encourages him

With her bouncing-ball chatter

She says:

Go. Go. Go. Go-go-go-go-go

And he does.

High into the air

Over the trees

Oh what a sight!

He floats in the breeze

Life is amazing!

As he flies under the moon

Soaring with Mama

And not a moment too soon
